Why use a root barrier?

Tree roots, knotweed rhizomes and other troublesome root material can cause a wide variety of structual problems. They will naturally spread into less compacted, recently disturbed soil, such as backfilled trenches. It is therefore important to prevent such incursion.

Root barriers will redirect root growth, eliminating structure penetration and surface rooting (which can prove so damaging to hard landscaping).

  • Lining the sides of tree pits will prevent sideways spread of upper roots, protecting pavements and services
  • Horizontal installation will prevent roots undermining foundations
  • Vertical installation can prevent incursion of troublesome roots from adjacent land and can protect the liner of ponds from root damage
  • Encasing service trenches with root barrier will protect pipes from root damage
  • Membranes assist in concentrating irrigation water into the root ball of newly planted trees and large shrubs whilst the anchoring roots develop
